The Municipality of Kythera and follow your art gallery, in collaboration with the Municipality of Platanias and the Contemporary Art Museum of Chania - Olivepress, are organizing and presenting the contemporary art exhibition of Kytherian and Cretan artists, "The Sea That Unites Us."
In this group show, Kytherian and Cretan visual artists explore the reciprocal interactions and relationships facilitated by the sea which both separates and connects Crete and Kythera. The collaboration and coexistence of these island populations will be examined through the maritime route that bridges communication, trade, solidarity, cultures, and the sense of freedom that the sea extends between them.
The exhibition "The Sea That Unites Us" was first presented in August 2024 at the Venetian Church of Saint Rocco in Chania, Crete, and is now being presented in Kythera with the aim of fostering connections, acquaintance, collaboration, and mutual understanding between the artistic communities of the two neighboring islands. It also seeks to encourage the exchange of opinions and positions among art-loving active citizens and cultural organizations, regarding the re-examination of our intentions on issues such as aquatic climate change, the sustainability of marine development, migration conditions, and the peaceful journey with our Mediterranean neighbors towards Pure Life and Creative Cultural Becoming, generously provided and continuously inspired by the Ancient Sea of the Mediterranean.
The exhibition is curated by follow your art gallery and the Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chania, Olivepress, Ioannis N. Archontakis. The special advisor for the exhibition is Professor Angelos Antonopoulos of the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA). The exhibition is co-organized by the Region of Crete, the Regional Unit of Chania, Match More Art Gallery, and is part of the Chania Art Program CHANiART 2024.
